Every 92 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. And every 9 minutes, that victim is a child. Prevention education is not one-size-fits-all.
When sexual assault victims arrive at an emergency department, one of the first people they encounter is a forensic nurse who is trained to gather information from the crime. Forensic nurses who are certified as sexual assault nurse examiners SANEs follow scientific and legal procedures to collect evidence and ensure quality of care for the victims. For SANEs, other goals of sexual assault and rape testing include assessing and treating injuries, preventing sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, and offering psychological support.

Awardees should have the infrastructure to recruit eligible nurses, coordinate didactic and clinical training with identified partners, monitor and track clinical practice hours, successful certification completion, and have demonstrated strategies to retain SANEs in practice.
The SANE is trained to identify physical trauma, document injuries, collect evidence and maintain the chain of custody, and provide necessary referrals. To become a SANE, a registered nurse must successfully complete a 40 hour training. An additional 25 hours of supervised clinical experience are also required. SANEs are trained in both the physical and emotional aspects of caring for victims of sexual assault.
Medical providers have ample opportunity to enhance medical, history-taking and documentation skills, in addition to mastering the collection and preservation of evidence. Medical providers who become Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners receiving training and on-going clinical supervision in the following areas:. Each examiner completes a NYS DOH-approved training in the forensic examination of victims of sexual assault and intimate partner violence.

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner SANE is a qualification for forensic nurses who have received special training to conduct sexual assault evidentiary exams for rape victims. Some programs are employed by law enforcement and conduct their exams at stand alone sites, not in an emergency department ED. Some programs will wait until the patient has had a medical screening exam MSE and subsequently have law enforcement bring a stable patient to the sexual assault response team SART site for their exam. If the patient is in critical condition and admitted to the hospital, the SANE can perform a 'mobile exam' and bring their exam supplies and camera to the hospital.
